Celebrate International Women’s Day at Longford Women’s Link On Thursday March 8, Longford Women's Link will be celebrating International Women’s Day by holding a day where the women of County Longford will have the opportunity to come together at their well-known centre in Ardnacassa Avenue. The event will run between 11.00am -4.00pm: Longford Women’s Link invites women to come along and join in the celebrations.
International Women’s Day is the global day for honouring the achievements of women past and present. Women on all continents, though often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate the day. Reflecting this diversity LWL would like to celebrate how women can come together in the face of adversity. LWL aims to build on Women’s resourceful nature this International Women’s Day; by providing the opportunity for women to come together in an enjoyable atmosphere to exchange food, recipes, clothes, books, singing and film. Thus, the theme for the day will be Women Exchanging. Longford Women's Link will be facilitating a variety of activities, that we hope all women living in Co Longford can participate in and enjoy. Admission is free, and all woman are welcome – why not come along and bring a friend!!!
The Day will start at the centre at 11am with a short introduction and Information on International Women’s Day globally; demonstrated through video format. Followed by short talks from guest speakers on the topic of culture; highlighting the positive aspects of the position of women various cultures.
From 11.30-2.00 the Friendly And Sociable Group will be hosting a ‘Eat & Exchange Lunch’’. All women attending are invited to bring some food to share on the day, such as bread, salad, rice dishes, cakes, biscuits, crackers – the important thing is too only bring cold food(s). It would be lovely to have a variety of cultural dishes to represent the diversity of women living in County Longford. You can also write down your recipe to share with others on the day!
Simultaneously, there will be an opportunity to bring along clothes, books, CD’s, nick-naks etc.; where an exchange shop similar to jumble sale will take place. It is important to note that no money will change hands, the event is completely free; rather it provides an opportunity to bring along some items you no longer need (once they are in good condition) and exchange them for something else. Any items left over will be donated to Longford Women’s Link.
The Day will close with a film, which demonstrates how women find support through their friendships with other women. LWL would like to invite all women attending to dress in their traditional cultural dress or as a woman they admire – past/present, it doesn’t matter once it is a woman you admire. This will give a visual display of women from around the world, past and present; it should also add to the fun and atmosphere on the day !
Don’t forget:
It should be a very enjoyable day all round, we hope as many women as possible come along to join us in celebrating this Day.”
